Follow–up of the Preschool ADHD Treatment Study (PATS)

Dr. Scott Kollins, of the Duke ADHD Program, is currently conducting a 5–year follow up study of the children who participated in the initial Preschool ADHD Treatment Study (PATS).

This study, whose results will be forthcoming soon (check back on the website for updates), enrolled over 300 children between the ages of 3–5 at the following academic research centers: Duke, Columbia University, New York University, Johns Hopkins University, University of California at Los Angeles, and the University of California at Irvine.

These children were followed for 14 months and received both parent training and medication to treat their ADHD. The last child completed treatment in August 2004. The goal of the follow up study is to continue to track these children as they get older to determine the impact of early identification and medication.

This study is not actively recruiting, since we are only following those children who were part of the initial study. However, the findings from this study will be important in helping to establish appropriate guidelines for medication use in young children.

Check back to the website frequently (see “Latest News Stories” feature on the Duke ADHD Program home page) for results from the original PATS study.
