Academic Summer Treatment Program

Thanks for your interest in the academic summer treatment program (STP). The Academic STP is for middle school students (entering grades 6–8) with ADHD. In its eighth year, the program is directed by Kristan Shimpi, Ph.D., a special educator with expertise in ADHD, and supervised by Desiree Murray, Ph.D., clinical psychologist. We use evidence–based techniques to teach study strategies, academic support skills, and cooperative learning activities in a classroom environment with a 1:4 ratio. Students in past programs have gained skills and made improvements both academically and behaviorally on their report cards. Key features of the program are as follows:

Note–taking Strategies: Students will learn a flexible, effective approach to studying for tests and learning information from written material. This technique, called SQ4R, includes the following steps: Survey, Question, Read, (W)rite, Recite, and Review. In addition, students will be taught note-taking strategies to assist them in recording information presented during class lectures.

Academic Support Skills: We teach academic support skills to help students become better organized, manage their time, and set goals for themselves. Students are given a well-organized notebook at the start of the program to practice these skills. We also provide education to help students understand how their ADHD affects them at school and how they can begin to advocate for extra help they might need in the classroom.

Cooperative Learning: Students complete cooperative group-work on ADHD–related research topics and prepare a presentation for the group at end of the program. These projects help students work on planning for long–term assignments, presentation skills, and positive peer interactions.

Behavior Management: Student learning and attention are enhanced through a behavior management system using "bonus bucks" to reinforce appropriate behavior and work completion. In order to make the system rewarding, bonus bucks can be traded for a short period of daily "free time" and "Fun Friday" activities.

Parent Education: As part of the program, two parent education workshops are offered during one evening each week of the program. The focus of these workshops is academic support for adolescents with ADHD, with strategies covering homework management and school advocacy.

Fee: $700 ($350 due at the time of registration)

Dates for the Summer 2010 ProgramTBD (Program runs in the mornings, Monday - Friday, for two weeks in the summer)
