CaP CURE (Association for the Cure of Cancer of the Prostate) - Research Award

Purpose:

Cap CURE continues to fund outstanding and novel basic science believed to be the cornerstone in the discovery of a cure for prostate cancer.  Success in this area of research since the founding of CaP CURE has resulted in many of the pioneering therapies that are now being studied in the clinic.

Duke Winners:
Year Primary Investigator Grant Title
2000 Johannes W. Vieweg, M.D. "Induction of polyclonal prostate cancer specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes using dendritic cells transfected with amplified tumor RNA."
2000 Michael C. Pirrung, Ph.D. "Novel anti-prostate cancer chemotherapeutics targeting the insulin-like growth factor receptor."
1999 Johannes W. Vieweg, M.D. "Immunotherapy of Metastic Prostate Cancer Using Dendritic Cells Transfected with RNA Encoding Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)"
1996 Eli Gilboa, Ph.D. "Immunotherapy of Prostate Cancer With RNA Pulsed Dendritic Cell Vaccines."
1995 Eli Gilboa, Ph.D. "Immunotherapy of Prostate Cancer Using Cytokine Gene Modified Tumor Vaccines."
1994 Eli Gilboa, Ph.D. "Immunotherapy of Prostate Cancer Using Cytokine Gene Motified Tumor Vaccines."
1993 Eli Gilboa, Ph.D. "Immunotherapy of Prostate Cancer Using Cytokine Gene Modified Tumor Vaccines."

The full announcement and description of this award may be found on the Foundation's website at:  http://www.capcure.org/Research/AwardAppl.asp?mainid=4&subid=27&param=resrch

Area of Research:

Advanced prostate cancer.  The awards are made in a variety of research areas, including genomics, molecular biology, angiogenesis, signal transduction, experimental models, apoptosis, new drug discovery, nutrition, alternative therapies, and clinical medicine. Since the program was established in 1993, emphasis has shifted from basic science to specific treatment applications. In its first year, awards were given primarily to scientists investigating the basic biology of the disease. In the 2001-2002 period, more than half of the awards were for specific treatment applications or translational research.

CaP CURE therefore will favor research applications focused on translational and clinical programs that will benefit patients with advanced prostate in the near term.

Eligibility:

Prior work in the area of cancer is not a prerequisite.  Applications from individuals with or without institutional affiliations will be considered.  Applications from for-profit organizations are not eligible for consideration.

Amount of Award:

Funding is for one year only, and it is an "award."  Therefore CaP CURE funds cannot be applied to institutional overhead, indirect costs or other organizational levies.  There are no restrictions on the number of times a scientist can apply.

Applicants are instructed to circle the amount of funding requested from CaP CURE on the Award Application Face Sheet:
$50,000                 $100,000               $200,000
$75,000 $150,000 Other

Selection Criteria:

Once applications are received, a peer-review panel selects the winners over a long weekend at the CaP CURE offices in Santa Monica, California. Awards are announced at the beginning of December and money becomes available before the end of each calendar year. Total turnaround time from application to award: 90 days. Significant results have been seen as many of these programs have resulted in treatment candidates.

Application Process:

The application process is designed to reduce bureaucracy and keep researchers in the laboratory and clinic.  Applications should be in narrative form and can be no longer than five (5) typewritten pages in length.  Additional supportive attachments are acceptable, but they must be pertinent.

  1. Complete the application form which can be downloaded in Microsoft Word or in PDF Format.  This will also serve as the face sheet.
  2. Attach biographical sketches (NIH format or short form) for all research personnel.
  3. Submit four (4) copies of the applicant's proposal and all attachments.
  4. Fill out additional face sheet(s) for each Investigator through #8 - Proposal Title.

Interdisciplinary collaboration is encouraged.  No budget is required.  Incomplete proposals, or proposals that exceed 5 pages (not including attachments), will not be considered, and will be returned.  Please note that due to the streamlined competitive award process being adhered to; CaP CURE is unable to provide critiques or evaluations to any applicant concerning their proposal(s).
NOTE:  The Office of Grants and Contracts (107 Seeley G. Mudd Building, DUMC / Telephone: 684-5175) must review all applications prior to submission to CaP CURE.
